I believe the best teachers are learners. I have spent the majority of my adult life learning, first earning a PhD Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, where I also earned my Master’s of Science and Bachelor’s of Science in the same field. Now I am a first-year medical student at Washington University in St. Louis with expected graduation 2025. Professionally, I have completed research focused on the field of MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), specifically studying piezoelectrically-based radio frequency communication devices. Since before I knew Top Score, I have worked with children, from programs for middle school children to mentoring in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program to teaching engineering concepts to junior graduate students.
My eight years with Top Score, however, have taught me so much about working with students in subjects that are as daunting for them as the 11 syllable terms above were for me when I was a wide-eyed Cornell undergrad engineering student. I understand what it feels like to be overwhelmed by STEM concepts, but I also know the joy that comes with the clearing of those storm clouds. Helping a lost AP Physics student find their way through real world applications and turn confusion into confidence drives me to keep doing it amidst my own busy days learning in med school. The former keeps me inspired and the latter provides me great perspective.
