Meet Josh Naddor: Middle & High School Math Tutor.
Although I’ve tutored professionally since 2012, it wasn’t until the Fall of 2016 that I decided I wanted to be a teacher and not long after applied for graduate work in Mathematics Education. After falling in love with the work I did in the Math Lab at the University of Georgia, I knew I wanted to assist students in learning mathematics and statistics, not just learn how to do it at the highest level myself. It definitely was encouraging to have students tell me, “I wish you were my teacher.”
As a tutor, I do my best to be relatable to students. I find students are more willing to ask for help when they’ve established trust with their instructor. To build rapport, I genuinely try to get to know my students. If they’re a talented cello player, I want to know about the music they favor. If they’re a huge college football fan, I want to know about their hero quarterback. I believe this goes a long way with my students, and is something they often remember about our work together.
In my experience, most students have a strong understanding of the mathematical concepts they are learning, and it is usually one or two techniques that trip them up. I pride myself on alleviating confusion for students across all math topics. I have a wide variety of techniques to help each student understand every step of the process. I use my mathematical prowess and my corny sense of humor to make sure everyone I work with has a strong understanding of the material being covered. While I’d be thrilled if every student loved mathematics as much as I do, I meet them where they are and help them achieve their highest priority goals, and generally by the end can get them to admit they at least dislike math a little less than they did before! I’ll always take that.
