Kim Johnson

I was born in Michigan but raised in the South for most of my life. I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was six years old and tried to get my siblings to play school with me. Many members of my family are teachers, so I’m continuing that heritage and tradition on both sides.

I have taught AP Literature for 15 years and served as English Department Chair, overseeing the teaching of AP Language for 10 years. While teaching AP Literature, I maintained a pass rate of over 90%. In addition to my work as an AP teacher, I led my school’s college essay course for over 10 years and have become an expert in the college essay process.

As a tutor, my goal is to build strong relationships with my students. When they know that I care about their well-being and success, they can trust me, my lessons, and my advice on their reading and writing. I love to have fun and use humor to help explain ideas and skills. My passion for literature drives me to help my students appreciate and understand what it can offer. I also want all of my students to become sophisticated writers because so many need to develop the skill of mature, professional writing. I work hard to help students improve their vocabulary, structure, and analysis. Ultimately, I want my students to feel over-prepared for their first-year classes in college.
