Meet Jacob Taylor: Middle & High School Math Tutor.

Originally from Pennsylvania, I have lived and worked in numerous locations across the country, including Iowa, Colorado, Oregon, and North Carolina, before moving to Washington, DC. Many of my work experiences have been oriented around giving back and having a positive impact on the community. In 2023, I pivoted to a career in education, becoming a high school math teacher. I have loved the opportunity to build a supportive classroom community in which questions are encouraged and mistakes are how we learn. Rote memorization is a thing of the past, now we focus on fostering genuine curiosity and deep engagement with the material.

As a tutor, my first goal is to build a trusting and supportive relationship with the student. There are no wrong answers or stupid questions. During sessions, I utilize intentional listening with students to learn about their strengths and identify misconceptions. I’m a firm believer that all students can learn to appreciate mathematics and be confident problem solvers. Finding patterns, reasoning logically, and solving problems are life-long skills that are developed at all levels of mathematics; as students see this connection, their engagement and confidence grows rapidly. I also believe that a strong personal relationship lays the foundation for a productive tutoring relationship, so I find opportunities to connect with students, identify areas of common interest, and learn about their life outside of our sessions.
