Meet Oliver Bass: Elementary, Middle, & High School Math Tutor.

A Washington DC native, I attended Sidwell Friends and graduated in 2019. After getting my Bachelor’s in Mathematics from the University of Chicago, I moved back to DC and taught at Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School as an elementary school math teacher. To me, math is less about speed and more about insight, and I’m drawn to tutoring because I love sharing the “a-ha!” moment with students when something confusing finally becomes clear. I want my students to see for themselves that math can be both beautiful and enjoyable.

My tutoring style is focused on building genuine understanding rather than rote memorization. In sessions, I help students think about why a method works, what assumptions it depends on, and how to recognize when those assumptions apply. I also believe a positive, supportive relationship is important for making students feel comfortable asking any question, and it allows me to identify gaps in understanding even when answers look right on paper. I want students to feel comfortable being stuck and to understand that “getting better at math” does not mean getting stuck less and less, but rather learning strategies to unstick yourself. Finally, I want students to recognize that math is a skill, and like any skill, it is developed through practice.
