Steven Feister

I have worked as a professional tutor for nine years, teaching various subjects including SAT, PSAT, ACT, GRE, SSAT, high school math, AP History, and AP Government. Growing up in Silver Spring, MD, I attended Takoma Park Middle School and Springbrook High School and took part in the magnet and IB programs. In 2008 I enrolled at my dream school: Duke University. I majored in both political science and film, graduating with distinction in 2012. Though I moved back to the DC area after college, I actually use the latter major in my professional life—I have worked as a Discovery Communications video editor for the past seven years. I cut shows about a variety of topics for a number of television networks (including Travel, Investigation Discovery, TLC, and Science), but educational shows that teach me something while I work are my favorite. I especially enjoy working on shows that focus on engineering and history, such as How It’s Made and What on Earth.

My teaching philosophy is based on preparation, self-reliance, and relaxation. I remember what it was like to be a high school student and constantly worrying about getting into a good college. I want my students to feel so prepared for their upcoming assessments that they view each one as an exciting challenge, not an intimidating obstacle. Too often tutors simply provide answer explanations, which only show the student how to do that question. I believe that skips several stages of learning, and I work with my students to more methodically understand and internalize the root concepts. They come to understand their own growth areas, attack them with my support, and then look back on the student they were months before and find real fulfillment in how far they’ve come.
