Will Buchholtz

I am life-long learner and educator with particular interests in physics and math. Dating back to 2014, I have over 10 years of classroom and tutoring experience and have taught subjects ranging from algebra and 9th grade physics to calculus and college level physics. I teach because it involves continuous learning and growth for everyone involved. It is also a way to contribute to tangible, positive change every day. I am a computational physicist by training, having completed my PhD in physics at Georgetown and my BA in physics at Pomona College. My research interests include fluids, molecular dynamics simulations, microstructure, and chaos.

Problems, discussion, and trust are at the core of my teaching style. While it is sometimes necessary to re-teach material directly to a student, learning is often best done by working through practice problems. This generally reveals where the gaps in a student’s knowledge are and promotes active learning. Perhaps my favorite part of teaching is then the questions and conversation this can prompt. I work hard to provide answers that are helpful, satisfying, and at the appropriate level for the student – an often challenging task in physics. Trust is crucial because deep learning requires a student to grapple and struggle and they need to know that the tutor will always be there to support rather than judge.
